ASSISTED LIVING NOMINEE

Aegis Living Ballard

Aegis Living Ballard seamlessly fits into its surrounding neighborhood as it fully embraces Ballard’s maritime history and Nordic roots.

The community integrates Northwest and Nordic influences in thoughtful and unexpected ways. The building’s exterior features a cannery-style design reminiscent of the fishing industry that shaped Ballard in the early 1900s. Inside, a locally crafted 36-foot-long Viking ship hull is suspended from the ceiling of the main hallway; a striking art installation titled “The Compass,” features a six-foot wheel carved out of recycled wood by local artist Steve Jensen, whose family lineage includes Norwegian fishermen and boatbuilders.

The Danish concept of “hygge”— coziness and comfort that fosters a feeling of community, contentment and well-being—is ever-present throughout the interior design. “Because of our embrace of hygge, the community has a wonderful atmosphere that you can feel the moment you step inside,” said Paul Shepodd, General Manager at Aegis Living Ballard. “It’s warm, it’s welcoming and makes you feel like you are coming home.”

Natural light, organic textures and materials like leather and wood, and elements of nature, create a cozy, tranquil and inviting space. Flowing from room to room is a soothing palette of coastal blues, nautical accents, and the calming sound of water.

A striking water feature and glass sculpture symbolizing spawning salmon and the nearby Ballard Locks fish ladder greets you upon entering the building. This sculpture, created by Yellow Goat Designs in collaboration with the Aegis Interiors team, comprises 87 acrylic prisms that catch light and change color.

The four-story building features 88,000 square feet of space and 92 assisted living apartments (studio, one and two-bedroom). The community also offers memory care featuring Aegis’ nationally recognized Life’s Neighborhood dementia programming.
