ACTIVE ADULT NOMINEE

First Commerce Center for Compassionate Care

Winston Churchill once said, “We shape our buildings; thereafter, they shape us.” At Big Bend Hospice, we took this to heart in creating the First Commerce Center for Compassionate Care (FCCCC) at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH). Our project was not a renovation but a transformation, designed to provide exceptional care in a home-like environment for patients and their loved ones during the most challenging times. The hospital wing was part of the original hospital built in 1948. It was stripped back to the studs and reconstructed with a focus on comfort and support. Every detail was designed to make patients and their families feel at home, from the soft color palettes and wood grain flooring to the curved accents and strategic use of natural light.

The transformation begins as soon as one crosses the threshold. The warm, inviting atmosphere contrasts sharply with the clinical feel of a typical hospital setting, providing a sense of relief and reassurance. Advanced technology is seamlessly integrated, ensuring that while care is state-of-the-art, the environment remains home-like. Each room features patient lifts for comfortable movement and scenic skylight videos that offer a choice of serene scenes, bringing the beauty of nature indoors. The design also includes practical elements to support families. The kitchen area is equipped for communal meals and celebrations, and there are laundry facilities for patients’ personal clothes. The non-denominational chapel caters to holistic care, allowing families to remain close and spiritually supported. Despite spatial constraints, we included versatile furniture to maximize comfort and functionality. Each room has a three-in-one sofa that converts into a bed, seating area, and table, accommodating family members who wish to stay overnight.

Personal touches are encouraged with wall shelves for personal items, and ample electrical outlets with USB and C connections ensure that devices remain charged, allowing families to focus on quality time together. The partnership with TMH, another non-profit entity, exemplifies a community-focused collaboration, addressing the critical need for a hospice facility within a hospital. This center provides a crucial service for patients too fragile to be transferred home and caring for patients who need inpatient services from the community. Big Bend Hospice offers the only wholly owned and operated inpatient hospice facilities in this region. These inpatient units are the Margaret Z. Dozier House and the FCCCC. The impact of FCCCC is best captured by a heartfelt testimonial from a family who experienced its care: “Our son died in our arms at the brand-new unit on the 3rd floor at TMH. This was the single hardest thing I have ever known. The staff were angels, absolute angels. They made an event which was as awful as any can be, as painless and gentle and serene as it could ever possibly be. We spent 2 days there and we are forever grateful.” The FCCCC is a testament to how thoughtful architecture and design can profoundly impact the lives of those it serves.
