HOSPICE

Good samaritan

The Good Samaritan Hospice and Palliative Care Center, located in Roanoke, Virginia, establishes Southwest Virginia’s first freestanding, inpatient hospice house, reimagining how end-of-life care environments can nurture both patients and families while providing unobtrusive medical support and serving the surrounding community.

The Center’s layout is based on a household model. Patient rooms are connected to shared residential spaces, including a kitchen, dining room, children’s play area, and living room, with direct access to the meditation courtyard. This outdoor space features walking paths, private seating areas, a pergola, and a fountain within a secure environment.

The design team was tasked with creating a sense of home rather than a hospital environment. The solutions to that challenge are hidden throughout the rooms in custom casework that conceals medical equipment and reduces its noise, soothing color palettes, and the integration of traditional residential spaces, such as a dining room and kitchen, that encourage families to gather.

Dining areas are strategically placed next to the Family Rooms and in close proximity of each patient room. Nursing offices are also concealed behind decorative displays. This provides visibility and connectivity for staff while also remaining discreet.

The campus offers several amenities for patients and their families. The Bereavement Room allows the community to gather for private prayer, group therapy, grief sessions, and more.  There are a number of Children’s Nooks, where children can play and remember their time with family in this home-like environment. Finally, the Meditation Courtyard and garden offers paved pathways, seating areas, a pergola, a water feature, and is surrounded by natural beauty.

Patient rooms include residential-style finishes, expansive windows, a bed for overnight stays, and space with built-in storage. Bathrooms offer zero-threshold showers, fold-down grab bars, storage cabinets, and plenty of space.
