Newbury Court, a life plan community in the Boston suburb of Concord, features two dining venues for independent living residents: the centrally located south dining, located in the main building, and the north dining, located towards the rear of the complex. Looking to elevate the north dining venue as a companion rather than a secondary option to the south dining, Newbury Court embarked on a redesign to entice residents to visit a somewhat out-of-the-way option. The design concept created a destination worth the travel, achieved by building a satellite kitchen with high-quality food, providing a casual dining experience with a different ambiance, and creating an inviting, welcoming entrance.
Dated drapery, half walls, and dim cove lighting have been replaced with an updated open space with new light fixtures bringing lots of light to the space. Jewel-toned fabrics complement the architectural finishes, adding warmth. Residents helped select the textured flooring patterns and furniture, ensuring that the final dining venue was crafted to meet their needs.
Check-In Station Before | After
Previously, a check-in station located in the doorway created a circulation issue for diners as there was no dedicated entrance. Now, the awkward octagonal dining room has been redesigned with a warm, welcoming entrance featuring transparent doors and windows allowing residents to easily see into the space. The restaurant ambiance is enhanced by relocating the check-in station inside the dining venue. Outside, residents can peruse the ever-changing menu displayed in real-time to view the daily options featuring local, fresh ingredients.
Kitchen Before | After
A formerly private dining area was turned into a new satellite kitchen where food can be cooked, prepped, and finalized, in addition to the main commercial kitchen located two floors below. Inspired by hospitality design, a glass window along the wall allows residents to enjoy the popular “open kitchen” aesthetic commonly found in restaurants offer, but without the noise that typically comes with it.
The temperate California climate also encourages an indoor/outdoor lifestyle, inspiring our members to enjoy
outdoor dining and lounging next to the fireplace in our courtyard.
Before (Staff Offices) | After (Sitting Room)
Before: Staff offices and underutilized flex space across from the dining room were mainly empty and unused. After: A dedicated sitting room with a double-sided fireplace extends the warm, cozy atmosphere or from the new north dining room, providing a homier feel for the residents. A sitting room allows for comfort and casual conversation, while on the other side of the fireplace sits a large room, which can be used for private dining, events, meetings, and overflow dining. The room was furnished in a way so tables can be reconfigured based on the residents’ needs.
