HOSPICE

Pikes peak hospice & Palliative care

Nestled into the wooded foothills of Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care provides essential end-of-life care to the Colorado Springs community. Pikes Peak Hospice believes that comfort and dignity should be accessible to all and that a hospice space should prioritize autonomy in the final days. The design is rooted in this philosophy.

To address the changing needs of local hospice services, Pikes Peak Hospice decided to create a new 12-bed inpatient hospice unit within its existing campus. The renovation converted an office space into an inpatient care center, increasing their inpatient capacity by 50 percent from the former inpatient unit in a hospital setting. As the only freestanding inpatient facility in the region, it meets a vital need in the community. The human-centered design of the new Pikes Peak Hospice inpatient care center prioritizes patients and their families.

Lobby Before | After

The design strategies and vision for the new facility were developed through coordination with Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care leadership and staff. The original lobby was a space that visitors primarily just passed through. Now from the entry, a similar circulation path leads to three areas of the facility: to the conference room, upstairs to the administrative office space, or past the reception desk to the in-patient unit entrance. Durable porcelain tile and wood panels were installed. Walls were replaced with glass panels to open the lobby and allow for natural light.

The temperate California climate also encourages an indoor/outdoor lifestyle, inspiring our members to enjoy
outdoor dining and lounging next to the fireplace in our courtyard.

Dining Before | After

The existing staff lounge and kitchen area was a dated and underutilized interior space with no natural daylight. Now, a full kitchen is available to both families and volunteers. Located next to the kitchen and kid zone, it creates social zones close to patient rooms. The family dining room is a spacious, open-concept area where loved ones can gather and share a meal. Natural light and warm wood tones create a welcoming atmosphere.

Designed to offer each member an elevated and engaged life, including the Elegant Palmer Library and Lobby.

Garden Before | After

The Donor Garden was a thriving, well-loved space for respite, but it lacked accessibility features that would enable all patients to enjoy the outdoors. Now, the Donor Garden has been expanded to encompass more of the site, creating a space for patients, families, and staff. The walking path was enhanced to provide wheelchair access and patient bed access.
