Southwood Children’s Behavioral Health Hospital (Southwood), owned by Acadia Healthcare, responded to a critical regional need by adding a 66,371 SF, three-story inpatient facility dedicated to children and adolescents ages 4-18 experiencing serious behavioral health challenges. IKM Architecture (IKM) guided Southwood leadership and community representatives through a collaborative design process, delivering a safe, empathetic facility below the anticipated project budget.
From day one, the design team worked closely with the client to create six nursing units, three 16-bed and three 20-bed units, strategically mirrored across floors to support staff efficiency, clear lines of sight, and consistent care delivery. Southwood leadership advocated strongly for dedicated staff break areas on every floor, essential spaces for recovery from the demands of high-stress behavioral health units. We also coordinated with the township police to review all security measures prior to construction. Every decision was grounded in four tiers of safety: protecting children, supporting staff, maintaining community wellbeing, and fostering public trust.

IKM’s design meets Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) requirements ensuring safety in behavioral health environments while integrating opportunities for play and freedom of choice. Open social spaces are strategically positioned near nurse stations, supporting supervised independence, an approach praised by Southwood’s psychiatrists. Two-patient rooms reduce isolation and promote peer support. The design also emphasizes patient individuality through room “doormats,” personalized signage, and finishes selected to reduce anxiety and promote healing. Indoor and outdoor play areas, a unique amenity not required by FGI code, provide a safe place for activities and access to the outdoors. Security is fully integrated into the design to avoid institutional cues associated with behavioral health environments.
The project was completed within the original overall budget, allowing Acadia Healthcare to pursue several additional scope items to improve the campus and existing facility. The project team stayed within budget by selecting cost-effective exterior materials, including fiber cement panels, Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS), and brick, which significantly reduced overall costs while achieving a colorful, welcoming exterior appearance.
Through collaboration and thoughtful design, IKM delivered more than a building. We created a supportive, secure environment that redefines behavioral healthcare for young patients. Born from direct coordination with Southwood’s leadership and driven by evidence-based design principles, the new hospital is a safe and uplifting facility that treats every child with compassion, dignity, and care worthy of their journey toward healing.
Each patient room has a dedicated “doormat” and adjustable light, creating home-like “stoops.” Soothing colors and nature-inspired wall graphics foster a calming environment in patient areas.
