RENOVATION / REPOSITIONING (BUILDING) NOMINEE

The Current

The Current of Beverly is an Assisted Living and Memory Care Facility which is owned and operated by Monarch Communities. Monarch creates communities that focus on the wellbeing of the residents with programs and spaces dedicated to the nourishment of the spirit, body and mind.

The project consists of a renovation of a historic 150-year-old school building with a 100-year-old addition. The building has been an Assisted Living Facility since a conversion in the late 1990’s. The property was in poor condition, tired and rundown when Monarch Communities took ownership and started the project. A major goal was to improve the Main Entry of the building in order to provide a welcoming element that was visible from the neighboring urban environment and to provide a distinct front door presence that was missing. A glass box vestibule provides this element while complying with the restrictions enforced by the Town, State and National Historical Commissions that were opposed to any major changes to the historic building. Another goal of the new entry design was to provide a welcoming outdoor gathering area for residents to enjoy the southern exposure.

Lobby Before | After

The Lobby was dark and claustrophobic despite south facing windows.  The exterior wall and the ceiling were removed and systems were re-routed away from the space to open up the volume as much as possible.  The lobby was enclosed with glass walls to the underside of the roof and light colored finishes were used to transform the previously dark entry into a delightful light-filled experience.

The existing corridors did not have natural light and were very dark and uncomfortable.  Glazing was added at the south ends of the corridors, at the connection to the staircase, to allow much of the daylight to pass through the stairway and into the corridors. Lounge seating nodes establish welcome spaces areas within the 12-foot-wide corridors that were in need of definition.

The temperate California climate also encourages an indoor/outdoor lifestyle, inspiring our members to enjoy
outdoor dining and lounging next to the fireplace in our courtyard.

Activity Room Before | After

The Memory Care Neighborhood was improved by opening up the congested common spaces so that they are open from the elevators to increase usable space and to have them seem more gracious.  We were able to distribute other functions and amenities into the wide corridors to allow these different spaces to be more functional and welcoming, while making better use of the existing space.

Designed to offer each member an elevated and engaged life, including the Elegant Palmer Library and Lobby.

Dining Before | After

The existing kitchen, dining and activity spaces are located on the top floor of the building.  We opened up these spaces at the elevator through a pub with large windows  with expansive views of Beverly Harbor and beyond.  A small Theater Space was added to The Pub with large door openings to allow for increased capacity and flexibility.
