RENOVATION / REPOSITIONING

VILLA MARIE CLAIRE residential hospice

Set upon 26 acres of forest in Bergen County, New Jersey, Villa Marie Claire residential hospice is designed for much more than patients’ comfort – it’s designed for their serenity. After seven years of sprawling interior and exterior renovations – without a cease in patient care – Villa Marie Claire reopened its doors in 2023, serving as a model for other residential hospice centers around the country.

Our grounds are a warm, welcoming haven that offer all the comforts of home in a luxurious setting: private accommodations, eat-in kitchen amenities, quiet spaces for reflection, and ample room for families and friends to gather. Our adjoining hotel offers respite for caregivers and families who wish to be close to their loved one at all times. Outside, patients and guests have access to a heated pavilion, outdoor kitchen, an in-ground heated swimming pool, and a spacious landscape for our unique equine therapy program. To meet our patients’ and guests’ daily needs, the premises are also home to a full-service restaurant, interfaith chapel, library with a piano, children’s playroom, and laundry facilities.

With calming colors, soft lighting, and curated decor, every detail at Villa Marie Claire has been purposely crafted with patients and loved ones’ comfort at the center. And yet, even after extensive renovations, meaningful tokens remain to honor the property’s remarkable, 117-year-old past: original stained-glass windows, an ornate fireplace, and even a secretary where renowned author Mary Higgins Clark wrote some of her most famous novels. State-of-the-art medical equipment is concealed to not disrupt the patient and family experience.

Once a stately primary residence, Villa Marie Claire was donated to the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Peace in 1929, who through the years used the premises for a school, convent, retirement home, and orphanage. In 2008, the Sisters gifted the property to Holy Name Medical Center with the expectation that it would become a facility for hospice care.

The temperate California climate also encourages an indoor/outdoor lifestyle, inspiring our members to enjoy
outdoor dining and lounging next to the fireplace in our courtyard.

Pavillion Before | After

In addition to extensive property renovations, we added a heated pavilion, outdoor kitchen, and serene scenic details. We reconstructed and modernized our common rooms to give residents and their loved ones plenty of space to gather. An on-site hotel, eat-in kitchen appliances, interfaith chapel, and heated swimming pool offer personal comforts in a luxurious setting.
