The Berkemeier Living Center at Wartburg exemplifies modern architectural innovation, beautifully integrating contemporary design with cutting-edge technologies within a historic campus setting. This project represents a fresh reinterpretation of a traditional care model, honoring Wartburg’s storied past while addressing present-day needs. Established in 1866 for children left orphaned by the Civil War, Wartburg was created to provide a familial environment. Reverend Gottlieb Berkemeier and his wife instituted a “family system,” grouping children by age and gender to foster a sense of home. Their success was evident as many children returned year after year to reconnect with their “family.” In 1897, Wartburg expanded its mission to include senior housing and medical care. By 1970 the orphanage programs became obsolete and in their place, comprehensive senior care services expanded. Remaining steadfast in commitment to service, and in response to the growing need for Memory Care services, Wartburg embarked on the construction of a new, five-story facility. This building not only meets the increasing demand for specialized services but also pays homage to Reverend Berkemeier and the center’s historical legacy. Positioned prominently as one of the first structures visitors encounter, the Berkemeier Living Center is designed to welcome and engage both residents and the broader community.
The first floor is a vibrant hub featuring event spaces that include a spacious lobby and multipurpose room. These areas are designed to facilitate various activities, foster resident interaction, and host community events such as lectures and performances. The lobby functions as a dynamic museum gallery, showcasing Wartburg’s historical artifacts through glass display cases.
A key feature of the first floor is the Music Therapy space, operated by the renowned Institute for Music and Neurologic Function. This room is designed to enhance residents’ physical, emotional, and neurological well-being through innovative music therapy programs. The ceiling’s colorful, playful acoustical shapes not only provide a visually engaging environment but also ensure optimal sound quality. Additionally, an operable wall allows this space to expand or contract in response to program needs, linking it flexibly with the multipurpose area.
The Berkemeier Living Center at Wartburg stands as a testament to thoughtful design that honors historical roots while embracing the future of senior care. Its innovative spaces and deeply personal touches reflect a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents while celebrating a cherished legacy.
