RENOVATION / REPOSITIONING (BUILDING) NOMINEE

the barrington at hioaks

The Barrington at Hioaks was Retirement Unlimited, Inc’s (RUI) very first community acquired in 1982. The brick building was built in the ’80s and decorated in the style of that time. However, it was not only the outdated aesthetic that inspired this extensive renovation project. Enhancing the utilization of spaces and providing for the needs of the residents was another reason. This extensive renovation added an RUI Fit Gym, Coffee Shop, drive-up portico entrance, an upgraded lobby, and an enhanced LUXE Unlimited Salon and Spa. Through this project, the community received an array of upgrades to promote socialization, ensure comfort, and create a more desirable aesthetic. With the combination of both indoor and outdoor spaces renovated, the residents received a full upgrade to their entire community experience.

Lobby Before | After

The former lobby had harsh lighting, little seating options, and was rarely used for congregating. Now, residents and guests are invited into the community with a blossoming room full of natural light, neutral tones, and ample seating. This room encourages congregating and relaxing in the heart of the community – the lobby.

The temperate California climate also encourages an indoor/outdoor lifestyle, inspiring our members to enjoy
outdoor dining and lounging next to the fireplace in our courtyard.

Coffee Shop Before | After

This area was formerly an underutilized resident laundry and vending machine room. Now, natural elements of textured wood featuring distinct colors allows one to relax in this newly designed coffee shop. The intimate space makes for a comfortable environment with flexibility for small gatherings and events.

Designed to offer each member an elevated and engaged life, including the Elegant Palmer Library and Lobby.

Salon Before | After

Additional Salon Before | After

The former salon was a cramped space with out-of-date features and harsh lighting. Now, hidden glass shelving, gold accents, bold patterns, and neutral tones contribute to the sleek design featured in this salon. The show-stopping room demands to be seen and experienced.

The former salon’s bulky furniture and mismatching décor gave the impression of a cramped and unorganized space. The enhanced pedicure and manicure stations create an environment focused around comfort.  Natural light pours into the salon leaving the golden room gleaming during pampering hours.

Parlor Before | After

Additional Parlor Before | After

The former parlor was an unutilized common room with outdated design and dim lighting.

Floor to ceiling mirror and rustic wood connects the self to nature as part of one’s wellness journey.  Up-to-date equipment and padded flooring add to the accessibility and safety of focusing on resident’s health.

The former parlor space did not appeal to the needs of the residents.

Ample equipment, a hydration station, and an entertainment center all lead to the comfort and ease of a successful workout session.  Vibrant colors on top of neutral tones encourage use of equipment as it draws the eye.
